The Portland Trail Blazers stole Game 2 on the road with a surprising 106-103 win over the San Antonio Spurs. They couldn't have done it without the play of Scoot Henderson, who was finally looking the part of the former No. 3 overall pick Portland envisioned.

Given the circumstances, it was the best game of Henderson's entire career. He finished the contest with 31 points, shooting an efficient 11-of-17 from the field and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.

Henderson has now strung together two consecutive games as an efficient, high-level scorer, totaling 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting in their first matchup against San Antonio. He's peaking at the right time for Portland, and it's a prime example of how this playoff experience was crucial for the development of their young core despite the slim odds of a deep run.

Scoot Henderson earns his spot in Portland's young core

Henderson appears to finally be turning a corner in Portland, rewarding the patience their front office has had regarding his non-linear growth. Ideally, he'd be able to put it all together on a more consistent basis, but the fact that he's trending upwards overall is an encouraging sign for the long-term outlook of Portland's 22-year-old guard.

Henderson's 2025-26 season hasn't gone to plan. Momentum was derailed due to an untimely hamstring tear suffered during an offseason workout, sidelining him for the majority of the season. He showed signs of rust returning, but because nobody had consistently seen Henderson reach his potential before the injury, questions remained about what kind of player he was.

The fact that Henderson is finally showcasing some of that star upside right when Portland returns to the postseason is perfect timing, as it now puts them into a win-win scenario. Whether he's coming into his own or just getting hot randomly, the Blazers will absolutely take it.

If it's the former, Portland's draft decision suddenly doesn't look as regrettable. There's still plenty of time for Henderson to return value on that pick, providing them with the star they were expecting after missing out on the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes.

If it's the latter, that's still incredibly valuable, too. Even if Scoot doesn't play to this level consistently, the ability to singlehandedly flip the script of a game should solidify his long-term spot with this core -- something that hasn't been as clear over the past few seasons.

Either way, it's become apparent that Scoot belongs in Rip City, and Game 2 just confirmed it.
