Deni Avdija's stock is finally trending in the right direction for the Portland Trail Blazers. From the start of 2024-25, Avdija has been valuable for Portland as a versatile two-way wing who can provide a bit of everything to elevate their overall level of play. The trade with the Washington Wizards was surprising, with the rebuilding Blazers giving up future draft capital in exchange for a more established player. But it also made sense at the time as Avdija is only 23 years old and still fits their rebuilding timeline.

Still, for the deal to benefit the Blazers, Avdija's three-point shooting needed to significantly improve from how he was to start the year with Portland, and it appears it finally has.

Key trends from the last 10 games

Avdija has averaged 11.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 0.8 steals, and 2.0 turnovers per game in his last ten appearances. That's on par with his season averages of 10.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.0 steals and 2.1 turnovers. However, one area in which Avidja has done much better lately is his three-point shooting.

After a slow and somewhat worrisome shooting start to the season, Avdija has now made 12 three-pointers in his last seven games, shooting 42.8 percent from deep during that stretch. It's not surprising that he's also shot the three-ball better in the Blazers' four wins (8 for 15) compared to their six losses (5 for 21). Avdija's three-point shooting seems to be a significant X-factor for the Blazers, but ten games is a small sample size, so that will be something to monitor as the season progresses.

Future predictions

The Blazers are currently decimated by injuries, with a total of seven players on their injury list in their matchup against the Indiana Pacers, and three of those players already ruled out. In the short term, Avdija's assists and scoring totals could benefit from taking on more of a role as a primarily offensive initiator for the Blazers. It was a role he had early on in the season with Shaedon Sharpe out, but Avdija is playing much better basketball now than he was to start the 2024-25 season.

Additionally, his rebounding should see an increase with Donovan Clingan out for at least two weeks with a grade 2 hamstring strain. They could also be without Robert Williams III (concussion protocol) and Deandre Ayton (finger). If all three are out, the 6-foot-9 Avdija could even see minutes at center, which Chauncey Billups has previously experimented with.

Whether Avdija will be a long-term starter for Billups and the Blazers remains to be seen. However, he's played over 30 minutes per game in each of their past two contests, and that should continue to be the case with the Blazers' injuries. If Avdija can continue the level of productivity he's had in the past ten games, particularly as an improved shooter, he should continue having a significant role in the Blazers' offense regardless of who ends up starting.

There's also always the possibility that Jerami Grant or another Blazers veteran gets traded before February's trade deadline, which would also open up more opportunities for Avdija.
