Blazers' latest Giannis trade idea comes with a catch Portland can't ignore

It could be a trap.

Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus recently ranked the top potential trade packages for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Portland Trail Blazers came in at No. 6. Here are the full details of the mock trade:

Portland Trail Blazers receive: Giannis Antetokounmpo

Milwaukee Bucks receive: Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, Kris Murray, Matisse Thybulle (via sign-and-trade), 2028 first-rounder, 2029 1st rounder, 2030 reversal of prior first-round swap, 2031 protected first-rounder, $11.9 million trade exception (Antetokounmpo)

So far, the Blazers and Miami Heat are the two teams known to be actively pursuing a trade for Giannis. The Bucks have made it known they'd like to decide on their superstar's future by the 2026 NBA Draft, which starts on June 23rd.

Though Portland is currently on the short list of teams with confirmed interest, they are far from being considered the favorites to land the Greek Freak. All signs point toward Miami as the leader in the clubhouse, as the Heat check all the boxes virtually for what Giannis is looking for in a potential landing spot.

Giannis Antetokounmpo isn't worth the risk for Portland

In some ways, Portland is the opposite of what Antetokounmpo covets. They are a small-market team playing in the stacked Western Conference, with a far more difficult path to the Finals. That complicates Portland's pursuit, as Antetokounmpo's player option after next season gives him significant leverage to choose his own destination.

Here, the Blazers take on quite the risk for what very well could turn out to be a one-year rental, trading away their first two top-ten picks of their entire rebuild in Shaedon Sharpe and Scoot Henderson.

Milwaukee is rumored to be seeking a combination of young players and draft picks in any potential Giannis deal, and this somewhat checks those boxes. The packages Pincus ranks higher include more of a rising star to headline the deal, with the top two including either Jalen Williams or Evan Mobley. Portland can send over high-upside players, but Sharpe and Henderson's inconsistent play makes that far from a guarantee.

To make matters worse for Portland, the NBA's lottery reform in response to tanking diminishes the value of the draft picks headed back to Milwaukee in this scenario. The Bucks should still want to regain control of their draft future, but it's no longer necessary to embrace a rebuild in the post-Giannis era.

Ultimately, this trade does a good job of balancing the uncertainty and risk on both sides. For Milwaukee, it's the question marks surrounding the backcourt pieces and whether Sharpe or Henderson can be starting guards on a future contender. For Portland, it's the unknown of whether Giannis is open to staying in the Pacific Northwest long term.

If he does decide to stay with his former teammates in Portland, this deal could become a steal for the Blazers. If not, it could age poorly and make Portland's front office look bad for sacrificing their future for a myopic move.

Because the risk is so severe, the Blazers are better off simply walking away from the sweepstakes for now. Until they get assurance of a commitment, the future assets are worth mortgaging. I don't expect that to happen anytime soon.

If we operated under the assumption that Portland makes this trade because Giannis committed, the calculus would shift entirely. But for now, this is an unnecessary risk for the Blazers.
