Blazers can grant Giannis the wish he thinks he'll find with the Heat

The Portland Trail Blazers are already in pursuit of Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, it's the Miami Heat who are considered the current favorites to win the sweepstakes.

Portland can offer Milwaukee a more enticing package than Miami, centered on the Bucks' pick acquired in the Damian Lillard trade and some combination of Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, and Toumani Camara. However, the issue is the uncertainty surrounding getting a long-term commitment from Giannis to stay in Portland.

Despite the connections to Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday, the Blazers are going to have a challenging time winning Giannis over. He prefers to stay in the weaker Eastern Conference, valuing that easier path to the Finals (and for what it's worth, a shorter flight to Greece).

Portland could still pull the trigger on a Giannis blockbuster without assurance of a commitment beyond next season, but that would be far from a calculated risk. The only way to justify sacrificing a portion of their future is to know for certain Giannis is coming to stay. And the only way that happens is if Portland convinces him that they have a legitimate shot at contention with him in the picture.

Blazers have to convince Giannis they can contend with him

They may be stuck in a Western Conference that somehow only continues to get stronger, but the Blazers still quietly have a strong case to make -- especially compared to their direct competition in Miami, a team that didn't even make the postseason in the East.

This postseason has shown the importance of depth in today's NBA, and the Heat would be left with few significant assets after including most of them in the trade. To a lesser extent, it could be similar to Giannis' bleak situation in Milwaukee all over again.

That's the key advantage Portland has in these sweepstakes that Giannis has to factor in. If he truly wants a chance at another title and values that above everything else -- weather, market, location, etc. -- then the Blazers should be near the top of his list.

Floor spacing would be the main concern regarding on-court fit. Still, they have the ideal blend of youth and veterans, meaning they can include the former to accelerate their timeline to contend with the latter. Portland could include up-and-coming guards Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe in a package headline by draft capital and still have plenty of valuable contributors leftover for a deep playoff run.

Even in the West, a lineup of Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, Deni Avdija, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Donovan Clingan has to be taken seriously as a contender. Especially with a bench that would potentially still have pieces like Jerami Grant, Toumani Camara, and Robert Williams III.

That's the disconnect in these Giannis trade talks that's hard to understand. If he truly wants out of Milwaukee and prefers to stay in the East because he wants to win, why are the Heat the most likely landing spot as of now? Roster construction is still far more important to winning than what conference a team finds itself in. Portland with Giannis has a better shot at contention than Miami ever would.
