LeBron James has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he will take his talents elsewhere for next season, ESPN's Shams Charania reports. From the Portland Trail Blazers' standpoint, it's good that they have one less team to worry about in their Western Conference Finals path.
However, James' decision could quickly become disastrous for Portland should he decide to team up with the talented California team up north: the Sacramento Kings.
Sorry, I couldn't resist the Kings jab. No, the Golden State Warriors.
LeBron James could finally team up with Steph Curry
James has previously named Curry as his dream teammate, and could finally get his wish this summer.
"Steph Curry's the one that I wanna play with for sure, in today's game," LeBron said on The Shop back in 2022. "I love everything about that guy. Lethal."
Of course, Father Time is undefeated. With Curry 38, LeBron 41, and Draymond Green 36, Golden State would be straddling a fine line between The Monstars and a retirement home. But with that comes decades of playoff and championship experience, which can't be overstated.
The most underrated aspect of LeBron's game is his basketball IQ, which doesn't diminish with age. Regarding Curry, shooting is typically the last thing to go as players decline.
The Warriors make perfect sense for LeBron James
We saw Team USA's 2024 Gold Medal Run where James and Curry were still focal points of the roster. And should Golden State add James' former Lakers teammate Anthony Davis into the equation by prying him away from the Washington Wizards, the league could suddenly be in trouble.
Unfortunately for Portland and the rest of the Western Conference, Golden State makes perfect sense as James' next destination. It's close in proximity to his family in Los Angeles, gives him a legitimate chance at a fifth ring, and perhaps most importantly, would make him happy. We saw throughout that Olympic run how much James genuinely enjoys playing alongside Curry, and he said that happiness would be a key factor behind this decision.
If he doesn't land in the Bay Area, you can't entirely count out a reunion with his former teams in Cleveland or South Beach. Now that the Heat have won the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, either team out East could be just a LeBron piece away from true contention.
For the Blazers' sake, let's hope that's the case. The West has already gotten stronger this offseason, and they can't afford to worry about the aging Warriors either.
