There's no burden quite as heavy in sports debates as that of carrying the title of "potential GOAT." Fans from every corner of the world engage in endless conversations that often turn heated about who the greatest of all time is and who could potentially usurp them.
Portland Trail Blazers forward Toumani Camara has unexpectedly entered the conversation after receiving a surprising emblem on his profile in The Ringer's top 100 NBA player rankings.
Camara deservedly appeared on The Ringer's list, receiving recognition as the 94th-best player in the Association entering the 2026-27 season. Teammates Deni Avdija at No. 22, Jrue Holiday at No. 74, and Donovan Clingan at No. 82 ranked ahead of him.
As noted by FanSided's Josh Paredes, however, only one Portland player had the unique distinction of being the "potential GOAT."

Camara didn't ask for the burden of being the potential GOAT, but it's one that he'll carry on his shoulders as he progresses through his career.

Jokes aside, Camara has become one of the best two-way players that the NBA has to offer. Though he's not necessarily a superstar or a GOAT candidate at this stage, he's an elite defender and a productive offensive player who has become essential to Portland's emergence as a playoff team.
This past season, Camara led the NBA by a healthy margin in offensive fouls drawn as he statistically contextualized the manner in which he puts his body on the line for the Trail Blazers every time out.

That, of course, only scratches the surface of how brilliant Camara is on the defensive end of the floor. He routinely takes on the challenge of guarding opposing teams' best scorers and playmakers, shifts between positional matchups, and excels along the perimeter and interior alike.
According to Basketball Index, Camara ranked in the 99th percentile in matchup difficulty and the 81st percentile in defensive positional versatility.
The pressure didn't break Camara, but instead made a diamond. He ranked in the 99th percentile in perimeter isolation defense, the 91st percentile in off-ball chaser defense, the 92nd percentile in screener rim defense, the 86th percentile in post defense, and the 76th percentile in screener mobile defense.
A defensive jack of all trades who has found a way to master several of them, Camara is deserving of all the praise he can receive. The "positional GOAT" tag may just test the reach of that statement.
