The Portland Trail Blazers held Media Day on Monday, with training camp set to open Tuesday. But between now and the start of the 2026-27 regular season, the biggest question mark surrounding this roster is whether Portland will reach a rookie-scale extension with former No. 3 overall pick Scoot Henderson.
General manager Joe Cronin was asked about a potential extension for Henderson at Media Day and whether or not that dialogue had taken place. Without going into much detail, Cronin said the two parties had been in contract talks, expressing "seemingly mutual interest" in reaching an extension before the season.
“There has been dialogue and seemingly mutual interest to find a deal that makes sense for both sides," Cronin said. "A lot of times these types of deals are hard to come by, especially for a high-variance player like Scoot has been so far, where he’s shown some really great moments and then some other moments where there’s still a few questions around his game. So those can be tricky sometimes, but speaking from the Trail Blazers perspective, he’s definitely a high-priority player for us. Would love it if he were here with us long term, and if it doesn’t happen this offseason, I wouldn’t be too concerned with it. We still have one more offseason to deal with it if we need to.”
Scoot Henderson is still a key part of this revamped Blazers backcourt
The Blazers did reach four-year extensions on Shaedon Sharpe and Toumani Camara before last season, but things feel a bit different this time around.
Last season was largely viewed as a make-or-break year for Henderson, who failed to rise to the challenge to no fault of his own after suffering an untimely hamstring injury during an offseason workout.
Now it's Sharpe who is sidelined for six months after suffering a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee during his own offseason workout in August.
Even with the trade for Ja Morant, Sharpe's absence and Jrue Holiday's positional versatility should give Henderson a path to minutes. It'll be even easier due to his evolving 3-and-D game, allowing Scoot to make more of a two-way impact in an off-ball role.
That will be key not only for carving out minutes alongside Morant and Lillard, but also for providing a complementary piece to Deni Avdija's point-forward game. With this plethora of ball-handlers and players the guard-heavy Blazers roster has, it's even more imperative that Henderson provide value without the ball.
He took a huge step in that department last season, which is a testament not only to his work ethic but also to the veteran leadership of Jrue Holiday. You could already see the impact Holiday had with Henderson on the defensive side of the ball. Hopefully, a similar offensive leap will happen with Lillard now able to provide that same on-court veteran leadership this season.
Cronin calling Henderson a "high-variance player" isn't necessarily inaccurate, but it does make me wonder whether he's willing to reach an extension with that level of risk baked in.
Even if Henderson doesn't reach an extension with the Blazers, Cronin still expresses confidence in figuring things out next offseason in restricted free agency if it comes down to that. If Henderson keeps expanding his off-ball game, he'll make it hard for the Blazers to let him walk in free agency.
