Will Zimmerle of the Sacramento Kings on SI recently proposed a trade involving the Portland Trail Blazers. Here is the deal in full:

Sacramento Kings Receive: Jerami Grant, Kris Murray, Orlando Magic 2028 First-Round Pick

Portland Trail Blazers Receive: Domantas Sabonis

It's worth noting that, as currently constructed, the deal doesn't work financially. Portland would likely have to throw in someone like Matisse Thybulle, adding another layer of complexity. But assuming both sides figure out the logistics, Portland has to seriously question whether Domantas Sabonis is even worth pursuing.

Donovan Clingan's breakout makes Domantas Sabonis a bad fit

The Blazers are expected to go star hunting this summer, with Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo being the headliner. But all indications are Portland is an unlikely landing spot for the Greek Freak, who prefers to stay in the Eastern Conference and has leverage in choosing that next destination thanks to his player option in 2027-28.

Portland needs to be searching for consolation prizes this offseason, but Sabonis is a less-than-ideal fit.

Donovan Clingan's breakout season has already solidified Portland's starting center position going forward, and Sabonis isn't quick enough or a reliable enough floor spacing option to be utilized as a modern-day power forward. He's best at center, where he can have more space to operate in the paint, but Portland has already invested back-to-back first-round draft picks at the position.

It would be one thing if Portland could implement a double-big lineup. Playing Sabonis at center unnecessarily risks stunting the development of their youth. It also goes against Portland's established defensive identity, given his limitations as a rim protector. The Blazers already have a true defensive anchor in Clingan, and that size and physicality are far better equipped for postseason success going forward.

The Blazers should avoid Sabonis this summer

We love the Jerami Grant, Kris Murray, and first-round pick framework. The Blazers should be actively shopping Grant in particular. His bounce-back season could open the door for Portland to get off his massive contract once and for all. But Portland needs to be far more selective in its star pursuit.

Adding a piece like Sabonis is a move that upgrades their roster in the short term, but it isn't enough of a needle mover to put them into contention. It would also be far more difficult to add a 1A superstar after Sabonis, given the financial constraints.

If Portland is adding more star power and looking past the questionable roster fit, it needs to be someone worth the exception like Giannis. Otherwise, they'd be much better off saving that blockbuster move until they find a star wing to pair alongside Deni Avdija.

At least this move doesn't cost Portland much in terms of assets surrendered. But it's also not the right direction to take the roster this summer.
