How many rounds are in the NBA draft?

You'd be surprised at how long the draft used to be.

The 2024 NBA Draft is scheduled for June 26 and 27. Last year, the Portland Trail Blazers had two picks in the first round; they selected Scoot Henderson at No. 3 and Kris Murray at No. 23. This season, the Blazers have four selections, two in the first round and two in the second.

Is that it for the draft? Just two rounds? Or are there more? And how long were the drafts of NBA past? (The answer to that last question could be a shock.)

There are 2 rounds in the NBA draft

The draft consists of two rounds, but there's a change in format for 2024. For the first time, the rounds will take place on separate nights, with the first round on June 26 and the second round on June 27.

The two-day schedule is different this year, but the two-round configuration has existed since 1989. The NBA draft is much shorter than other major American sports - but it wasn't always that way.

Before 1960, teams just drafted until they ran out of prospects. In 1974, the night was cut down to 10 rounds, and by 1989, it was the current two-round affair.
