3 Free agents the Portland Trail Blazers should avoid at all costs

For various reasons, the Blazers shouldn't target these three free agents this summer.

3. Talen Horton-Tucker

The Los Angeles Lakers are partially to blame for Talen Horton-Tucker (THT) being on this list, as the media have overvalued him since coming into the league as a second-round pick in 2019.  Horton-Tucker has spent two seasons with the Utah Jazz after coming over in a trade for Patrick Beverley. Many expected THT to take advantage of his new role and increased opportunity in Utah. Instead, he has plateaued around roughly 10 points and 20 minutes per game the past two seasons.

Although he's well-rounded, he's not particularly elite at one skill. He also wouldn't be a great fit for the Blazers, as he's shot less than 30 percent from three in his career. If you are a bench player like THT, it helps to have one elite trait that coaches can utilize in specific matchups. He doesn't possess that valuable trait as a role player, and it's hard to envision a scenario where he'd get significant minutes in a crowded Blazers backcourt.

The 6-foot-4 guard out of Iowa State is still only 23 years old and could get a relatively substantial contract from a team in free agency willing to bet on his upside. But the Blazers shouldn't be interested in THT's potentially inflated free agency value.
