Pick No. 5: Detroit Pistons select Matas Buzelis
After finishing with the worst record in the association at 14-68, the Detroit Pistons were unlucky in the draft lottery. The good news is that if there’s ever a draft to fall in, this appears to be the one with no clear-cut consensus of who the top picks should be. Buzelis could also be in play for a team like the Spurs at No. 4, but the Pistons at No. 5 are by far the most popular landing spot for Buzelis in mock drafts.
Buzelis averaged 14.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 2.1 blocks on 45/27/68 shooting splits this season with the G League Ignite. Like many prospects in this year’s draft, Buzelis’ main concern is his shooting. His form suggests he’s much better than his 27 percent shooting beyond the arc. However, if he struggles to shoot at the next level, it will be extremely hard for Buzelis to return top-five draft value, which makes him a relatively risky pick.
Despite his shooting concerns, Buzelis has an intriguing upside as a 6-foot-10 forward with a well-rounded skillset. The Pistons need help in multiple areas, and Buzlies would be a great fit to improve their overall level of play.
