A Gary Trent Jr. homecoming suddenly makes perfect sense for the Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers have remained quiet in free agency, with their only signing being Branden Carlson. Hopefully they make another addition soon, as options are already dwindling entering Day 3.

This team desperately needs to address two roster flaws: shooting and wing depth. With that being the case, a reunion with former Blazers sharpshooter Gary Trent Jr. suddenly makes perfect sense.

The Blazers do have a guard logjam after acquiring Ja Morant and apparently have no intention of resolving it by trading Jrue Holiday. At 6-foot-5, Trent is a bit undersized to play the small forward position. But according to Basketball Reference, he did play the three for 61 percent of the time last season with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Portland could still use more positional size at the forward position, but they have multiple roster spots left to fill. A homecoming with Trent and a subsequent move for a larger, more defensive-minded forward would help fill the gaps of this convoluted roster.

Gary Trent Jr. would help round out this Blazers roster

It remains to be seen whether either side is interested in a reunion, but Damian Lillard's return could strengthen the case. For Portland, it's at least worth pursuing, considering Trent is theoretically still in his prime at 27 years old.

That hasn't been the case in terms of on-court production, as he's had two down seasons in Milwaukee. Last year, he averaged 8.1 points in 21.2 minutes per game, shooting an inefficient 38.7 percent from the field. But didn't Portland just willingly take a flyer on Morant in hopes that he would benefit from a change of scenery? New owner Tom Dundon appears to value these buy-low opportunities on players, which could apply to Trent to a lesser extent as well.

He's only a few years removed from being a key contributor for the Toronto Raptors, hovering around 18 points per game in consecutive seasons. But beyond the feel-good storybook reunion of Trent back in Portland, this team needs his floor spacing regardless of whether his overall production picks up.

It wouldn't be a needle-moving addition by any means, but it would certainly be a win on the margins. Portland entered this offseason with shooting as the top priority and has somehow managed to go backward in that area with the surprising flyer on Morant.

Now, they need to win on the margins to balance out a wonky roster better. And of the remaining free agents available on Day 3, there are few better sharpshooters realistically available for Portland than Trent.
