One of the biggest questions for the Portland Trail Blazers after an offseason of polarizing moves is how it will impact Deni Avdija's performance on the court. But given that the first-time All-Star saw a lot of double teams last season, it's safe to assume that he stands to benefit greatly from the Ja Morant addition and Damian Lillard's much-awaited return.
Stats show that Avdija was among those who were doubled the most in the 2025-26 campaign. He was in the same league as Kawhi Leonard, Jaylen Brown, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
It may have proven to be an effective strategy against the Blazers, as the star wasn't as productive on such possessions as several other players. He wasn't solely to blame, of course. The team barely had anyone else who could create for himself or others. It is partly for that reason that Portland ranked 29th in field-goal percentage and dead last in average turnovers.
Blazers added more offensive juice
There should be plenty of optimism among Rip City fans, as Lillard and Morant are expected to take off a significant amount of the offensive burden from Avdija.
The fit could prove to be rocky, though, especially between Avdija and Morant. Both of them thrive as the attacker and are below-average outside shooters.
Bringing the former Memphis Grizzlies superstar off the bench could address the potential floor-spacing woes. Still, he is expected to help in drawing defenders away from Deni, and it's up to the star forward to take advantage of the increased single coverage he will likely see from defenses.
And while the fit between Avdija and Morant could turn out to be problematic, things should run more smoothly for Deni and Dame for obvious reasons. It shouldn't be too big an adjustment for the Blazers legend to play more off-ball.
Moreover, new head coach Micah Nori could add some pick-and-roll action involving the two in Portland's offensive playbook. Keep in mind that besides being one of the best shooters ever, Lillard is also a lethal pick-and-roll handler. That should allow Avdija not just to experience fewer double teams but also to capitalize on mismatches and late defensive rotations.
Avdija will have a lot to prove this year
It remains to be seen who will end up atop the Blazers' pecking order once the regular season starts. However, Avdija is arguably the franchise's most important long-term piece, and it has to do whatever it can to set him up for success.
The six-year pro currently has one of the most team-friendly deals, which he signed when he was still with the Washington Wizards. A renegotiation of his contract could soon take place, and he is certainly out to prove that he deserves a massive salary hike.
So, Avdija has to take advantage of the opportunity to play alongside what may be the most talented set of teammates he has ever had. Â
