Dark horse Giannis landing spot could gift the Blazers an unexpected star

All eyes are on the Miami Heat as the frontrunner in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade sweepstakes. One way or another, a decision on Giannis' future is expected by the June 23rd NBA Draft, a target date set by Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam.

That said, it would also be surprising if a deal were reached before the conclusion of the NBA Finals. Milwaukee continues to canvas the league to see if it can get a better offer than Miami's. The Heat package is believed to include Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., either Pelle Larsson or Kasparas Jakucionis, and draft picks (up to three first-rounders), according to Sam Amick and Eric Nehm of The Athletic.

Heat don't have exciting assets to offer for Giannis

The Portland Trail Blazers have a better potential package, given their treasure chest of young assets and picks stockpiled throughout their rebuild. While it's still possible Portland will land Giannis, the Bucks superstar has a lot of say in where he ultimately goes, seeing as he has a player option in 2027-28 and teams will be reluctant to sacrifice the winning package to risk what could be a one-year rental.

Miami is currently considered the favorite because it's the one destination where there's mutual interest.

Giannis is open to going to Boston, but it remains to be seen whether the Celtics would part ways with Jaylen Brown to make that happen.

Portland stands at the other end of the dilemma as a franchise willing to go all-in on Giannis but first needs assurance of a long-term commitment.

But even though the Heat are the one team with confirmed mutual interest and have been technically able to trade for Giannis for almost two months, a deal has yet to materialize because, quite frankly, that's not a very enticing package.

After all, there's a reason Blazers general manager Joe Cronin picked the Bucks package over the Heat's in the Damian Lillard. Even Giannis is reportedly concerned about the aftermath of the Heat's roster after they trade all these players to land him in the first place.

Orlando checks every box for Milwaukee and Giannis

One dark horse who shouldn't be ruled out is the Orlando Magic. They check similar boxes that Giannis is looking for in terms of staying in the Eastern Conference, and even still heading to Florida (though not quite the same market appeal).

Most importantly, Orlando would still have pieces leftover to give Giannis a chance at contention. After all, that's the entire point of staying in the East in the first place -- the easier path to the Finals. He's not going to achieve that with the Heat, but could with the Magic.

Orlando has already made an aggressive move last summer, acquiring Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies. They are still a piece away from contention, and could decide to double down on that aggression with an all-in move for Giannis.

If they do decide to get in the running, they could easily outbid the Heat for Giannis, with rising star Paolo Banchero as the headliner. That's where the Blazers come in as a facilitator, turning in those future Bucks picks for Banchero.

Blazers could steal Paolo Banchero as a facilitator

Milwaukee is seeking to regain control of its 2028-30 draft picks surrendered in the Lillard deal, which would make it far easier to initiate a full-on rebuild after trading Giannis. Portland has leverage, as they shouldn't give back those picks unless it's for a true needle mover, ideally one who fits their rebuilding timeline.

Nobody in that Heat package is worth returning those picks for, but Banchero very well could be.

Admittedly, the fit isn't perfect here. He would fit well in addressing Portland's frontcourt depth, but the floor-spacing issues are the biggest red flag. Both Banchero and Deni Avdija are somewhat redundant as jumbo playmaking forwards who use their physicality to get into the paint. But there's no denying that Banchero would significantly boost Portland's star power while also being a great overall addition for their young core at just 23 years old.

Ultimately, landing Brown from the Celtics could be a better two-way fit as a co-star for Avdija. But Banchero is certainly worth considering if the Magic are the ones who surprisingly win the sweepstakes.

Cronin has shown a willingness in the past to turn draft picks into more established players if they fit the timeline of their young core, and I wouldn't count out Banchero as potentially being that next piece. Orlando has a better chance at winning the Giannis sweepstakes than some give them credit for, because they quietly have everything both Giannis and Milwaukee are looking for.
