The Portland Trail Blazers could have a chance to add significant pieces (or a piece) to their team this summer, which should help give Damian Lillard a chance to win at the highest level. But as the Minnesota Timberwolves attempt to build around Anthony Edwards, they could be star-chasing, too. Lillard needs the Blazers to beat Edwards and the Wolves’ quest this summer.

Minnesota could really shake up its roster this summer around Edwards, who seems primed to lead the Wolves into the future. Meanwhile, the Blazers are in a position to take advantage of their improvements last season, especially with Lillard coming back from his injury. So, the two Western Conference sides could be fighting over similar trade targets.

Lillard needs the Blazers to act faster than the Wolves.

This past season, Portland took a leap. The Blazers made the playoffs for the first time with their new core, led by Deni Avdija, Shaedon Sharpe, Donovan Clingan, and Toumani Camara. Jrue Holiday was a perfect veteran presence.

But now, with the West’s powerhouses taking center stage, the Blazers should look to significantly improve this summer. They should hit the trade market. They should hit it hard.

Their best chance at beating Victor Wembanyama’s San Antonio Spurs and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Oklahoma City Thunder is trading for a 1A or high-level 1B type of scorer.

However, they won’t be the only team seeking out that type of star power this summer. In fact, Edwards and the Wolves find themselves in a very similar position, considering they will also have to go through Wemby and SGA.

Reports have indicated that the Wolves could consider serious changes this summer. They view their core as Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, Naz Reid, and Joan Beringer.

That means guys like Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert could be on the trade block. And if the Wolves trade one of those two guys, they’re going to want to get a star back in return.

They want to give Edwards the best chance at winning over the next five to 10 years, and it feels like this summer could be very important to maximizing the future.

But with Avdija, Sharpe, Clingan, and the rest of Portland’s core, the Blazers have a real chance to win now, too. Especially with Lillard entering the final few years of his career.

Lillard has a chance to win. He has a chance to be on a high-level playoff team. But the Blazers need to add significant reinforcements this summer, which they are equipped to do.

They just have to beat out Edwards and the Wolves on the trade market.
