Damian Lillard has made his retirement plans clear. When that time finally comes, it will be as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers.

"Whenever it does end, that's definitely my plan is to be playing for the Trail Blazers in my last game of my career," Lillard told D.J. Siddiqi of Casino.ca in a recent interview.

Lillard has always been consistent in his intention to return to Portland after requesting a heartbreaking trade in 2023, previously stating that he "sees there being a time" when he's back playing at the Moda Center. But that reunion fortunately happened sooner than anticipated.

The Lillard-Giannis pairing shockingly never panned out as expected, resulting in two early playoff exits. That was due to several factors, one of which was injury. The silver lining to Lillard's brutal Achilles tear, if there even was one for an injury that severe, would be that it opened the door for his Rip City return. In a desperate move, Milwaukee waived and stretched Lillard's salary, clearing space to sign Myles Turner this past offseason.

That gave Lillard the freedom to land with any team, even potentially pursuing his first championship with a new franchise. After all, the Miami Heat were his preferred landing spot in 2023. Instead, Lillard returned home to Portland after two short years. It gave him the opportunity to rehab for an entire season close to family, with a rare trade clause to guarantee he'd stay in PDX this time around.

Lillard's return is aligning perfectly with the Blazers' rebuild

Lillard is also adamant that this return was as much of a basketball decision as anything. Portland has had a successful rebuild with an exciting up-and-coming roster, largely thanks to the pieces it received from trading its superstar guard in the first place. Although their defense hasn't met expectations this season, Portland has elite individual weapons on that end of the court. Their length and athleticism are well-equipped to compensate for Lillard's defensive limitations, while Dame will provide this team with much-needed shooting and playmaking.

The real question is what version of Lillard Portland gets back. The fact that he's already showcased his shooting with yet another 3-Point Contest victory is an encouraging sign, and the patient rehab approach will certainly help as well. It's not a perfect comparison given the age discrepancy, but the fact that Jayson Tatum has been playing relatively well in his Celtics return should give Portland reason for optimism.

As far as when Lillard will retire in Portland, well, that remains to be seen. Lillard added that he doesn't have a timeline, but will know that it's time to hang it up once he notices his play declines. He has a $14.1 million player option in 2027-28, at which point he'll be 37 years old. Whether he picks that up or even plays beyond it depends on how he looks next season.

The window isn't quite shut just yet, and Lillard could have an opportunity to finish his career with that ring he's always coveted with the franchise he remained loyal to throughout the ups and downs. His return is aligning well with Portland's core development, giving him at least a shot.

But at this point, we're just happy he's finishing his career where it all started.
