NBA insider Jake Fischer provided an update on the Darius Garland trade buzz (subscription required) that should increase the chances of Anfernee Simons being traded to the Orlando Magic:
"For all the noise these days around Darius Garland in Cleveland, we've been reliably told that the Cavaliers and Magic have not held substantive conversations on a Garland deal … and that Cleveland has little interest in helping Orlando improve its standing in the Eastern Conference."
Fischer also recently named the Magic and the Toronto Raptors two surprise teams to watch this summer. "I've heard a ton of buzz so far... they're clearly making calls and seem to be a team that is going to be a factor on the guard market," he said regarding Orlando.
By now, those visiting Rip City Project should know that Simons and the Magic have been discussed for far too long. But there's a reason that it's been the most talked-about landing spot for Simons for multiple years now, and this finally feels like the summer an internet-fueled rumor turns into reality.
Magic forced to pivot away from Garland, opening the door for a Simons trade
It once looked like the Blazers had serious trade competition with the Magic, who were seen as strong suitors for Garland. Orlando was even named a potential trade partner for Cleveland by Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com. Simons is solid, but Garland is an All-Star and would be a more significant backcourt upgrade for Orlando. Deciding between the two would have been a no-brainer.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst previously mentioned that there's "some belief that Darius Garland might be available under the right circumstances." That may still be the case, but fortunately for Portland, it doesn't sound like Orlando is one of those circumstances.
Before, most of the Simons to Orlando talk was largely speculative. Fans and analysts alike were logically pairing the trade partners: Orlando is Simons' hometown area, the Magic desperately need more shooting, and Portland should be clearing the path for Scoot Henderson after investing a No. 3 pick in him.
But now, with Orlando's interest in a backcourt upgrade confirmed and their options dwindling, there appears to be real traction here.
Hopefully, the Blazers can trade Simons before the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25th, landing one of Orlando's first-round picks at No. 16 or 25. Time will tell whether a deal ultimately gets done, but with Garland seemingly off the table, it’s looking more likely than ever.
