LeBron James has officially made his decision, and it's somewhat surprisingly the Philadelphia 76ers. ESPN's Shams Charania reported Friday that James is signing a two-year, $8 million deal that includes a player option.
The Portland Trail Blazers, and every other team that plays in the Western Conference for that matter, have to be relieved that James is now back in the East.
There were a few Western Conference teams named as possible landing spots, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, and Denver Nuggets. At 41, James may not be the player he once was, but he's still pretty darn good. Had he picked one of these teams instead, Portland's chances of a deep playoff run would've taken a significant hit.
Blazers should be thrilled that LeBron is now in the East
As James mentioned on X, the biggest motivation behind picking Philadelphia was that he believed they were a contender with him in the picture:
"This is my last decision. I'm not going for money. I'm not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship."
While this decision doesn't propel the 76ers into the top contender tier with the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder, it does shake up the entire NBA landscape. The West has dominated the East for as long as I can remember, and there's finally a better balance between the two conferences.
While San Antonio and Oklahoma City are arguably the two best teams in the league, what the East has is depth. They now have the 76ers with James, defending champion New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors, Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Look at the superstars that have joined teams on that list: James (Philadelphia), Kawhi Leonard (Toronto), and Giannis Antetokounmpo (Miami).
Sure, Portland still has two potential dynasties to worry about in the West who just so happen to align with their rebuilding timeline. Eventually, they'll need to add a superstar name of their own to give themselves a chance to contend.
But in terms of making a deep playoff run, the fact that James is taking his talents to the City of Brotherly Love has to be a sigh of relief.
