Blazers' Giannis dream may have just been crushed by latest trade rumor

The Portland Trail Blazers are open to acquiring a star this summer, but general manager Joe Cronin has made it clear that they aren't willing to sacrifice their entire future for an all-in move. They've expressed interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo, which would be quite the splash in Tom Dunon's first summer as the new owner. However, the Blazers aren't going to trade away part of their future unless they get assurance that Giannis is committed to staying in Portland.

With a player option in 2027-28, he has leverage in picking where he wants to go, as teams like the Blazers would be reluctant to package valuable assets for what could very well be just a one-year rental. That presents a major hurdle for the Blazers in the Giannis sweepstakes, as it's consistently been rumored that the Bucks superstar has no interest in coming here.

Giannis Antetokounmpo doesn't want to come to Portland

Sam Amick and Eric Nehm of The Athletic recently provided more intel regarding the Giannis trade rumors, which will dominate the NBA offseason, especially after Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam made it clear he'd like to come to a decision prior to the June 23 NBA Draft. They noted that Giannis' desired landing spots will be a major factor, adding that teams confident in his long-term commitment will be more comfortable making a compelling offer.

The Blazers are in the driver's seat when it comes to required assets. They hold all the leverage in those valuable Bucks picks from 2028-30, thanks to the Damian Lillard trade. But unfortunately, we're at a stalemate when it comes to acquiring Giannis directly. Amick and Nehm say that "there is significant skepticism among rival executives" that he'd welcome a trade to Portland.

Playing in a smaller market far away from Greece doesn't help their case, but Giannis is also rumored to prefer staying in the Eastern Conference as he wants to join a legitimate title contender.

Giannis must realize Blazers would actually contend with him

I understand Giannis not wanting to come to Portland, despite the connections to former teammates. But the only part I push back regarding these rumors is that the Blazers wouldn't be considered a contender if they land a top-five player in the world. I'd argue they are in as good a position as any, given their ideal blend of youth and veterans.

How many times have we seen teams go all in for a superstar, only for their lack of depth to become a problem because they sacrificed it in that very trade? Just look at how disastrous the Kevin Durant trade turned out for Phoenix, for example.

Portland is in a position to send Milwaukee the best package, including its own picks and high-upside youth such as Shaedon Sharpe or Scoot Henderson. Yet they'd still have the veterans to contend with this aggressive win-now timeline.

A potential starting lineup of Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, Deni Avdija, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Donovan Clingan is legitimately four stars and one of the best up-and-coming defensive anchors in the league. They'd still have a strong bench, too, given their underrated depth.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter unless Giannis himself is convinced that's enough to win at the highest level. Unfortunately, it sounds like Portland faces an uphill battle in that regard.

The good news is, they can still benefit from a Giannis trade by cashing in those picks for another star from a third team. But it's increasingly looking like the only role Portland will play in a Giannis trade this summer is that of a facilitator.
