The Portland Trail Blazers are actively pursuing Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. Thanks to the Damian Lillard blockbuster, Portland has key leverage in the sweepstakes, as Milwaukee is seeking to get its draft picks back in any Giannis deal.
While Portland can offer arguably the most enticing package of any Giannis suitor, unfortunately, they still aren't considered a frontrunner to land Antetokounmpo. The Milwaukee forward has leverage of his own in determining his landing spot, with a $62.8 million player option in 2027-28.
Seeing as Giannis prefers to stay in the Eastern Conference and play in a big market, it's difficult for Portland to convince him to commit to staying long-term. That makes the Blazers' most likely role that of a facilitator.
Trading for Giannis with no guarantee he stays would make or break the Blazers' rebuild
The exception would be if Portland is willing to take a massive gamble. Even if Giannis doesn't commit, are they still willing to sacrifice enough assets to outbid other suitors?
"I wouldn't throw in every asset without assurances of Giannis re-signing, but I'd probably throw in most and just hope you convince him to stay. Those are the kinds of sacrifices I think teams like Portland have to make," Casey Holdahl said on X.
Winning the Giannis sweepstakes without any guarantee of him being anything more than a one-year rental would be the type of make-or-break move that could define the Blazers' entire rebuild. The best-case scenario would be that Giannis' arrival propels this team into contention, convincing him that the grass wouldn't be greener elsewhere.
That's a legitimate possibility for a 42-win Blazers roster that is set to be even better next year with Damian Lillard's return, internal growth from their youth, and any additional external moves they make this summer. A successful season in which Giannis is reunited with his former Bucks teammates, Lillard and Jrue Holiday, could be enough to convince him to stay long-term.
Alternatively, the worst-case scenario is that Portland's aggressive move backfires. They give the Bucks their picks back, which could still be top-five selections despite the league's drastic changes to their lottery odds in response to tanking. Additionally, they'd have to sacrifice a key building block like Toumani Camara or a potential rising star such as Scoot Henderson or Shaedon Sharpe, with both guards coming off the best seasons of their young careers.
Portland would be sacrificing key pieces of their rebuild without certainty that Giannis would be enough to elevate them to the top tier of Western Conference juggernauts, such as the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder. It would be an exciting season, but one where Blazers fans are left wondering whether it was all worth it should they be forced to pivot after Giannis goes to a more preferred landing spot.
Both outcomes would be on the table, and there's no clear answer with the Blazers at a crossroads in their rebuild.
