23. New York Knicks draft Dillon Mitchell
Mitchell ranked as the number five player coming out of high school in 2022 ahead of Brandon Miller, Jarace Walker, Anthony Black, and 24 other 2023 first-round picks. One disappointing season at the University of Texas later, and scouts are questioning if he is a first-round choice. Mitchell started all 38 games but averaged just 4.3 points and 3.9 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game.
Can the 6’8 forward remind everyone why he was a five-star recruit? His athletic ability, size, and NBA-ready body make him intriguing, but Mitchell needs to add more to his game. His defense and offensive game beyond the impressive dunks are in question. Can he shine in his second season at Texas and take his game to another level?
The Knicks have a stocked rotation and the desire to trade for a star. If they plan on contending for a championship, they do not want a rookie in the rotation. Mitchell is a 6’8 developmental project. Can they turn him into a plus-defender who can stick on the floor offensively? New York is the perfect franchise because he can spend a couple of years in the G League ironing out his game before jumping into the NBA.
It is a massive season for Dillon Mitchell. If he struggles again, his draft stock will fade and may never recover.
