18. Miami Heat draft Dereck Lively II
Lively II is the second-best center in this class, and his stock has improved during the pre-draft process as he has displayed some outside shooting ability that was non-existent at Duke. The 7’1 big man is getting buzz as high as ten, but finding a fit isn’t easy. Even the Heat have Bam Adebayo, but fans know they will take the best player available.
Lively II averaged 5.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks in 20.6 minutes per game during his lone season with the Blue Devils. Fouls were an issue, but the 19-year-old improved tremendously down the stretch. Adding an outside shot throws in another dimension to be excited about, but it is going to take time for Lively II to make an impact.
The 7’1 center has a reported 7’7 wingspan and a ton of potential on both ends of the floor. What better place to realize it than in Miami? The Heat could help him expand his range and take advantage of his strong skillset as a roll man. They would also assist him in adding some toughness and cutting down on his fouls.
Dereck Lively II is unlikely to last this long in the 2023 NBA Draft. Some team will trade up for him before he falls to the Heat, but Miami will be licking their chops if he is still available.
