15. Atlanta Hawks choose Jordan Hawkins
Hawkins had a breakout second season at UConn where he helped the Huskies with the NCAA championship. The 6’5 wing barely played as a freshman before averaging 16.2 points and 3.8 rebounds in 29.4 minutes per game in year two. Hawkins hit 38.8 percent from 3-point range and is an elite shooter off movement.
The Hawks want to improve, but they are set in the backcourt with Trae Young and Dejounte Murray. Hawkins would have to add some bulk to play next to those two. He is an outstanding floor space, who keeps the ball moving more than being a primary playmaker. The 21-year-old could quickly make an impact with room for continued improvement.
There are questions about his defense because of his slight frame. Hawkins measured at 6’4 with a 6’7 wingspan at the combine, but he is just 186 pounds. He was the sixth lightest player that weighed and the lightest among projected first-round draft picks. Can Hawkins hold his own defensively with his slight frame? He is a winning player, but it will be a massive challenge.
The Atlanta Hawks could go in multiple different directions this offseason. There has been talk of them trading into the top ten, and they will certainly be a team to watch on June 22.
