The Portland Trail Blazers introduced a new mascot before their home contest with the New York Knicks on March 14. His name is Douglas Fur, he’s a descendent of a former Portland mascot, and he prefers to dress like a hipster.

The Blazers organization also gave Douglas a riveting backstory.

A deep dive into the history of the franchise’s mascots can be found on the team’s website. Here’s a portion of what the Portland PR team had to say about their new hipster sasquatch:

"Our Big Foot has remained elusive and undetected by humans for decades by carefully navigating the over 80 miles of hiking trails throughout Forest Park while naturally blending in with other un-shaven local hikers, and explorers camouflaged in local hipster, outdoorsy, Northwest attire."

Doug and Blaze the Trail Cat – Portland’s other mascot who apparently “found” Mr. Fur in Forest Park – even have their own favorite places to visit throughout the city, such as the rose garden, the Oregon Zoo, and, of course, Moda Center.

And there’s more:

"Douglas, too shy to ever make himself known, decided to fill his days by playing solitaire, eating his favorite vegan dishes, and drinking cold brew."

Doug is also actually a descendent of a former Portland mascot, cleverly named Big Foot, who made appearances at Blazers games in the 1980s.

Here’s to Douggy – what Blaze apparently calls his new BFF – providing some light-hearted fun at home games down the stretch of the regular season, because the actual players sure aren’t doing it.
