Portland Trail Blazers 2022 NBA Draft Big Board Prospect #12: Johnny Davis

Another guard that the Portland Trail Blazers won’t need, Johnny Davis is best off drafted as an asset and then traded away for a more fitting piece.

With great size for his position, Davis can use his physical advantages to create good looks for himself in the paint and the midrange. His touch provides promise for his ability to grow into a 3-point shooter, but he’ll have to improve on his form to stretch out to the NBA arc.

Davis’s greatest trait is his defense. Not only is he a physically imposing defender as a guard, but he also shows great hustle and instincts. His frame, length, and timing allow him to insert himself into passing and driving lanes and disrupt attackers.

Unfortunately, his below-average athleticism puts a cap on his ceiling. He’ll have to become a more cerebral player in the NBA to replicate his college output, especially on offense. Although he has great touch at the rim, he’ll have trouble finishing against NBA size and length since he’s not an explosive leaper.

Still, with his handle, size, midrange shooting, and playmaking instincts, he should be able to make an offensive impact on his new team. If he can develop a deep jumper, he should be a reliable NBA starter for over a decade.
