Portland Trail Blazers forward Carmelo Anthony has interest from Lakers
Portland Trail Blazers power forward and NBA legend Carmelo Anthony, is a free agent now, and has significant interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, according to Bleacher Report.
After signing consecutive one-year deals for the Blazers, where he provided above-average production on the veteran’s minimum, Melo is a free agent again. After both last season, and this season, Melo’s three-point shooting and clutch shot-making has meant his market has been bigger than the veteran’s minimum. Last season, he decided to take less than the minimum to come back and help the Blazers, but this season, he may choose another route.
As Melo has made around $250 million in his career, money won’t be the motivation to go somewhere. After two seasons with the Blazers, he may decide that he wants to go to a proper contender instead.
Bleacher Report this week reported, after the blockbuster Russell Westbrook trade from the Washington Wizards to the Lakers, that the team was pursuing veteran free agents Rudy Gay, and DeMar DeRozan as well as Melo.
Melo actually may be the best fit out of those three players. Because he will likely take the veterans minimum, and he can be a spot up shooter from the corners while main ball-handlers Westbrook and LeBron James set up the offense, Melo may be the perfect role player.
But, he may need to take an even lesser role than he had on the Blazers, which may not appeal to him. Melo has provided strong spacing and clutch shot-making on the Blazers, but this may be his last NBA season, so I understand that he would choose the team that gives him the best chance of getting a ring.
Free Agency opens in under 48 hours now.
