Portland Trail Blazers second-round steal #2 – Day’Ron Sharpe

Day’Ron Sharpe is a six-foot-eleven big man out of the University of North Carolina.

Playing just the one year at UNC, Sharpe is more of a traditional big man than Thor, but he has the NBA-ready body and basic skill set to succeed at the five right away.

At a big 260 pounds, Sharpe is strong, but nimble on his feet. With nice touch around the rim, he is able to overpower smaller opponents on the block or run the floor for easy finishes in transition.

Though he hasn’t flashed any shooting ability yet, his defense projects well around the rim. He has good anticipation and blocked 1.8 shots per 40 minutes in the NCAA last season.

Sharpe is also an excellent rebounder on both ends. He led the ACC in offensive rebounds last season, with a total of 97 boards.

He would need to work on his jumper and then also his lateral movement, but Sharpe looks to be the type of guy who could be a backup big on an NBA team. With the Blazers still lacking a good rim running big who can block shots, Sharpe could be their man.
