Portland Trail Blazers big man Zach Collins just can’t catch a break. NBA Insider Shams Charania announced today that Collins has re-fractured his foot.

The Blazers also made the below announcement in this article.

"Collins underwent a second revision surgery today to repair a left medial malleolus stress fracture."

Collins has had surgery before in September and December of 2020 as well, and it looks like he has chronic issues with his foot, that may end his career. It’s tough to say that his career is over right now, but with a likely recovery of at least three-six months from this injury and surgery, he is probably out of the league for now. The Blazers could decide to give him a one-year minimum deal if he can return at some point in the season, but I feel this is highly unlikely.

You never want to say a young player’s career is over, as maybe they rehab and come back in the next season, but it isn’t looking good for Collins.

On the big man front, Jusuf Nurkic is still under contract, and the Blazers carry Enes Kanter‘s early bird rights, meaning they can offer up to 175 percent more than what they paid him last season.

With Nurkic’s injury history and Kanter’s struggles on defense, the Blazers will need to sign a more mobile big who can get out on the perimeter and maybe even block some shots as well. This will likely be on the veterans minimum, as the Blazers don’t have the money to spend their $5 million mid-level exception on a big man. Nurkic recently said there likely won’t be any trades so this says the team will use their smaller exceptions instead.

We wish Collins all the best in his recovery and hope he can make it back to the NBA.
