Sam Cassell deserves a shot with the Portland Trail Blazers
Many of the best coaches in the NBA were former role players; take Phil Jackson, Doc Rivers, and Steve Kerr for example. Sam Cassell could be the next to join their ranks.
Cassell played 15 illustrious NBA seasons, suiting up for eight different clubs in his career. He spent time as both a reserve and starting guard, having averaged 15.7 points and 6 assists per game.
Cassell was as tough as they come, always knew where to be and when to be there, and was never afraid of the moment. His game IQ and intangibles made him a key part of three championships with two separate teams.
That championship mettle is just what the Trail Blazers need to push them over the hump.
Cassell wouldn’t be one of the players hired simply for what he’s done on the court either. Since retiring following his championship with the Celtics, he’s spent the last 12 years serving on coaching staffs for three different teams.
Half of those years were spent learning under the tutelage of Doc Rivers and he’s currently on staff for the title chasing Philadelphia 76ers.
Hopefully his next pursuit of a ring will be on the sidelines for the Trail Blazers.
