Portland Trail Blazers sign Harry Giles, free agent from Sacramento Kings

The Portland Trail Blazers have signed big man Harry Giles, formerly of the Sacramento Kings, to a one-year free-agent deal on the minimum.

The Portland Trail Blazers have signed 22-year-old free agent big man Harry Giles, formerly of the Sacramento Kings. Continuing what has been a great offseason, Giles joins other new additions to Derrick Jones Jr, Enes Kanter, and Robert Covington.

As per usual, NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski announced the signing.

Giles was originally drafted 20th by the Blazers in 2017, but as a draft-night deal, the Blazers could select Zach Collins.

Giles had his fourth-year option declined by the Kings, meaning they were limited in what they could re-sign him on this off-season.

As a center who can occasionally play power forward, Giles had a solid season in 2019/20 – averaging 6.9 points and 4.1 rebounds in 46 games for the Kings. With Zach Collins having surgery in the off-season, the Blazers needed one more backup big to consolidate the roster.

Giles will likely share backup duties with Enes Kanter, and he could potentially play some four with his switchability on the defensive end.

At just 22, Giles has a chance to show he still belongs in the NBA and that he still has the game that made him the number two recruit in the country back in 2016. He will be able to develop in a situation far better than that of the dysfunctional Kings.
