Los Angeles Clippers

Why It Makes Sense for the Portland Trail Blazers

With the possible departure of Hassan Whiteside, acquiring JaMychal Green gives Portland another big man option off the bench.

Green is set to make only 5 million dollars next season, making him a very cheap option for Portland compared to Whiteside which frees up money to be used at other positions.

He provides above-average defense, stellar rebounding (almost 11 a game per 36 minutes), and most importantly a very underrated three-point shot. Green shot nearly 40 percent from deep over the last two seasons on over three attempts per game.

Giving up Hezonja and a second-round pick isn’t too much of a sacrifice for a quality bench piece on a good contract who can step into the starting lineup in a pinch.

Why It Makes Sense for the Los Angeles Clippers

Mario Hezonja can fill the backup small forward position nicely for LA, a position they sorely lacked last season after trading Mo Harkless for Marcus Morris at the trade deadline. While he isn’t a great shooter, his above-average defense and intriguing potential make him a good pickup for Los Angeles.

The 46th pick in the draft is also an intriguing option for a team with no first-round picks this year. They could package it and the 58th pick to move up into the early second round and draft a high floor low ceiling type of guy like Payton Pritchard to provide an immediate contribution to their title-contending roster.

The move also saves the Clippers over 3 million dollars in cap space, which is valuable for a team as deep in the luxury tax as they are.
