Portland Trail Blazers backup point guard #4 – Allonzo Trier

24-year-old Allonzo Trier has been in and out of the farce that is the New York Knicks guard rotation. This is no reflection on some of the Knicks’ talent, more around how they choose to build and then play their guys.

Trier is an exciting combo guard, who I would give a two-year minimum if that’s what it took to get him.

Trier disappointingly took a back seat in his second season after an exciting first year. In the 2018/19 season, he averaged 10.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in just 22.8 minutes a night.

Trier is a six-foot-four combo guard who has a six-foot-six wingspan. In his 88 NBA games, he shot 38.4 percent from three. He is a springy guard who, as well as being able to shoot it, can get to the rim and draw fouls.

After playing 64 games in the 18/19 season, he played just 24 games in the 2019/20 season before the Knicks waived him in June.

Trier isn’t a great defender, but he is just 24 and showed enough promise in his first season that he could be worth investing the minimum of $2 million in.

In a messy situation on the Knicks, he was able to put together a strong season. In a more stable environment in Portland, he may be able to succeed. Also, the Blazers development staff could help him with his defense and potentially advance his playmaking.
