Portland Trail Blazers: Season Awards
By Jakob Ashlin
Sixth Man of the Year
Enes Kanter has been the best player off the bench for the Blazers, but he only logged 15 appearances off the bench for Portland this season due to being signed in February and thrust into starting lineup following the Nurkic injury. As a result, he is not the selection here.
Rodney Hood was also in the conversation, but due to his trade deadline acquisition, he only made 22 appearances off the bench.
Therefore, Seth Curry is our winner. Curry is one of the most efficient shooters in the NBA. He is third in the NBA in three-point percentage at 44.4%.
Curry’s impact has been huge for the Blazers. This is a team that lacked complementary scoring around Lillard, McCollum, and Nurkic to start the season. Despite not carrying a large scoring average, Curry is capable of scoring an efficient 20 points on any given night, if he simply is aggressive enough.
The Blazers are a whopping 15-0 when Curry scores at least 12 points.
He also scored 20 points or more five times this season, which is not bad for a player averaging just over 18 minutes per game.
Curry leads Portland’s bench in plus minus, as well. His statistics may not be eye popping on the surface, but his value to the Blazers has been immeasurable.
In a season full of ups and downs and hot streaks and slumps, Curry has been a known variable. Sometimes, that is exactly what you need on a playoff team.
The guard rotation behind Lillard and McCollum constantly changed throughout the season. Stauskas was dealt. Hood was acquired. Layman spent some minutes at shooting guard. Simons and Trent Jr. were not necessarily NBA ready. Curry’s presence has been huge.
Honorable mention: Rodney Hood
