player. Pick Analysis. (1976-80), (1987-88). Maurice Lucas. 12. Scouting Report. PF. 34

  • 15.6 PPG, 5 seasons
  • 23rd in franchise history in points (5,151)
  • 14th in franchise history in rebounds (2,876)

Maurice Lucas‘s averages may be deceiving. He only spent four seasons with the Blazers and then returned for his final season when he only averaged 6.1 points per game. That season weighs down his averages.

In his prime, Lucas was unstoppable. After dominating in the ABA, the Blazers selected Lucas second overall in the ABA dispersal draft, which was part of the NBA merger.

In 1976-77, Lucas led the Blazers in scoring in his first season with 20.2 points per game and along with Bill Walton led the Blazers to an NBA title.

Lucas averaged 16.4 points per game during the 1977-78 season. He then averaged a career-high 20.4 points per game the following season. He was also selected to the All-Defensive first team in 1978 and the Second team All NBA that same year.

In 1980, he was traded to the Nets for Calvin Natt.

During his playing career, Lucas earned the nickname “The Enforcer”. He is famous for elbowing Darryl Dawkins in the head in the 1977 NBA Finals after Dawkins threw a punch at Bob Gross, Lucas’s teammate.

Lucas may not have had a long tenure with the team and on the surface, his per game averages are not as impressive as others on this list. However, leading a championship team in scoring gives him a considerable jump in the rankings.
