Kiki Vandeweghe was actually drafted by the Dallas Mavericks. He did not want to play for the Mavericks and demanded a trade, eventually being moved to the Denver Nuggets becoming an All-Star in Denver.
Vandeweghe competed for scoring titles in Denver. He finished second in the NBA in scoring in 1983 and third in 1984.
The Nuggets traded Vandeweghe to the Blazers after the 1984 season for Calvin Natt, Fat Lever, Wayne Cooper, and draft picks. Vandeweghe averaged 22.4 points per game during his first season in Portland.
In his second season with the Blazers, Vandeweghe got more comfortable and averaged 24.8 points per game. In addition, he shot an insane 54 percent from the field.
In 1986-87, he led the league in 3-point percentage at 48.1 percent. Vandeweghe also averaged 26.9 points per game that season. He continued his high level of scoring production the following season scoring 20.2 points per game. Vandeweghe was traded to the New York Knicks for a first round pick midway through the 1988-89 season.
Vandeweghe established himself as one of the best scorers of his era. He put up huge scoring averages, while still maintaining a high level of efficiency. He may not be as high on the franchise scoring list as others behind him, but his scoring average is so impressive that he finds himself at number 5 on our list.
