‘Mr. Portland’ Jake McGrady is doing it for Rip City culture, Blazers fans
By Dayton Brown
Biggest advice for anyone looking to start their own podcast or business?
Jake: “The biggest issue that people have (and) the question I get the most is: ‘When you start something new, and you’re not getting much traction — what do you do? How do you get notoriety?’ And that’s the thing: There really is no secret formula besides consistency and just not (caring) what people think about what you do.”
What was it like having John Gourley and Jason Sechrist of Portugal. The Man as guests on your 2nd String Sports podcast?
Jake: “That has been the absolute highlight of my media career. After we had filmed the interview, we all just looked at each other like ‘Did we just sit down with the lead guys of a band with the No. 4 song in the United States for our show?’ And from the day it dropped and beyond is where I’ve really found my passion for doing more, and seeking for what’s next.”
What’s next for you and Mr. Portland?
Jake: “I guess it’s really just up to me to make that path. I’m a guy who is always thinking positive. I believe what you manifest, happens. If you want to pursue something, literally go for it. Land that interview, send that email. I also want to help out people pursue their dreams, especially in Portland. Whether it’s the podcast, the clothing brand, or even my brand, I will continue to grind until I reach every goal I set for myself.”
Goals
And McGrady is already moving on to bigger things. He landed a job with Laundry Service. The company manages social media accounts, helps with creative services and helps develop talent..
A couple of huge fans messaged McGrady and Ocampo recently, requesting for a signed picture from the podcast crew. The fans lived across the country, marking a new demographic for the gang. It seems like the boisterous podcast will go national in no time.
As a fellow native of the Pacific Northwest, it is absolutely amazing to see McGrady grind his way thus far. A jack of all trades can make multiple dreams come true, but it doesn’t matter unless steps are taken to pursue those dreams and never stop.
Final words from McGrady, who’s been doing it for the Rip City culture for more than three years now:
“Send that text,” McGrady says. “Send that email. Put yourself out there. Reach out to those people you never thought you could have. Because, if you don’t, it’s never going to happen, and you’ll regret not going the extra mile.”
