To add a superstar, the Blazers are going to have to draft one
By Ty Delbridge
Center, DeAndre Ayton. Freshman, Arizona.
"“Ayton has elite physical tools, standing 7 feet tall with a 7-foot-5.5 wingspan and an excellent frame. He also is fairly skilled offensively, showing potential as a finisher and jump-shooter.”"
"“Ayton is striking, a tantalizing prospect who has the makings of being one of the league’s next great big men. Standing at 7-foot-1 with a near 7-foot-6 wingspan, a reported 43.5-inch vertical jump, and a brawny frame, the Bahamian native already looks like a man among boys at the college level. Arizona is going to feed him buckets inside. He’s a punisher when he’s cutting to the rim, with good hands and fluid movements that enable him to score with power or finesse. Coach Sean Miller won’t hesitate to let his big man roam on the perimeter, either. Ayton has excellent shooting potential; he’s a physical specimen with the offensive skill set of the league’s prototypical big men.”"
My analysis:
Ayton is arguably the best player in this draft class. He reminds me of DeMarcus Cousins. A do it all center on both ends of the floor.
Ayton would come in and start right away for the Blazers. His three-point shooting ability is ideal for Stotts’ system and he can also be a slash off pick and rolls.
Ayton has a full college season with Arizona to show his talent.
The Blazers do have Jusuf Nurkic, who is young and full of talent. The Blazers could look to let him walk and add a guy like Ayton. Or they could pair the two; Ayton has the skillset to play next to anyone.
Next: Shabazz Napier earning more playtime
Summary
These are just five of the top guys in college basketball this season. There are several other players who could come in and help the Blazers become playoff threats.
It’s a long college season and we are just getting started. Be on the lookout for more draft pieces and looking at who would be good fits for Portland.
