Draft Picks & Cap Space

The Trail Blazers still owe a lottery protected first round pick the the Denver Nuggets. This is a debt owed from the mid season acquisition of Aaron Afflalo. If Portland misses the playoffs this season they will keep their first round pick. This hand cuffs the ability for them to package this pick in a trade, even if it looks like they will finish well short of the playoffs. If Portland still hasn’t given the pick to Denver by 2017 it will then become two 2nd round picks. (information via RealGM)

This really throws a wrench into the Blazers ability to exchange picks for valued talent. Portland did acquire future 2nd round picks from the Cavaliers earlier this year, so they do have some ability to throw in future considerations (although limited).

Cap space could possibly be the biggest asset the Trail Blazers possess. The Blazers are currently under 50 million dollars in committed cap space (lowest in the league). Damian Lillard‘s massive extension is due to kick in next season, but even then the Blazers sit at only 46 million dollars in payroll for 2016-17. (information via Basketball-Reference)

Portland’s low cap number will allow them to take on contracts in lopsided trades. While this might not put them in line for the top targets on the market, it will however allow them to acquire talent as cash strapped teams look for wiggle room.

The abundance of cap makes up for the limited resources in the draft. Asset Grade: B
