Major league allegations coming out today as reportedly the FBI is saying an NBA referee bet on games that he refereed and could have affected the outcome of said games. As usual, I refuse to jump on this story until I see some proof but where is the proof? How can they prove if he was really changing the course of meaningful games? I don’t think there has been any talk of a single referee being so obviously glaringly bad…and to put your stamp on a game like that, you would have to do some major BS calls. This isn’t going to be the death of basketball but it will be interesting to see what comes out about it.
In baseball, things are starting to heat up. Barry knocked two out of Wrigley Field yesterday and is inching closer and closer to the record. The pressure is on for first-place teams. Despite the fact that they are 7 games ahead of the Yankees there is a lot of talk about ‘Can the Red Sox hold on?’ I believe they can and will but this is baseball so anything can happen. Will Cleveland catch Detroit? Will the Mariners stay hot enough to catch the Angels? In the National League, the big dogs are wanting their spots back. The Braves are currently 2.5 games behind the Mets for the NL East. The Cubs are only 3.5 back of the Brewers and the Dodgers are tied with the Padres. I’m telling you if the NL Playoffs were the Mets, Cubs, Dodgers and Braves I would watch. If its the Mets, Brewers, Padres and Dodgers…not so much.
This whole Michael Vick thing…my thoughts on the matter are pretty plain and simple. He is not going to go to jail. Remember the media has pulled this act before. When Ray Lewis got arrested everyone was talking about ‘oh his career is over, his life is over’. So far from the truth. When Kobe Bryant got arrested everyone was talking the same thing. Also far from the truth. It is going to be a bumpy and testing time for Michael Vick but he isn’t going to jail. Someone will take the fall for him or something, you cannot pin all of this on one man. Plus, unless he has a terrible lawyer ala Mike Tyson he will definitely be ok. Also…someone is trying to go after him. I don’t know who it is but someone has it in for Michael Vick. Because this is going to get PETA and all sorts of anti-animal abuse groups into this. And you know what happens when they get involved (they never shut up). There has been talk of Vick taking a paid leave and missing all of next season…I wouldn’t do that. If I was in his position I would get the best lawyer money can buy and go on with my life. It doesn’t matter if he is charged in the court of public opinion, only the real court truely decides his fate.
Will he play or won’t he? That is the question on David Beckham and his scheduled debut tomorrow against Chelsea. He said it isn’t looking too good. Funny, the ESPN hype machine is going to have suck that one. It was a pretty nice commercial. And while we’re on the Beckhams, I caught Victoria Beckham: Coming To America on NBC last night. She’s hilarious. Seriously, one of my top 15 favorite people on the planet right now. All the personality that Beckham may lack she definitely makes up for.
