2019 NBA Mock Draft 5.0
By Jakob Ashlin
I like this fit for both sides. Grant Williams is one of the best players in all of college basketball averaging 18.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, but front offices will shy away from him due to his traditional style of play.
Williams is dominant in the post, but at only 6’7″, teams will be hesitant to give him minutes at center. The Jazz could eventually use him in Derrick Favor’s role. Williams could dominate against weaker stretch fours alongside Gobert if the Jazz move on from Favors after the 2019-20 season.
In the meantime, he could be a valuable backup to Gobert or Favors and could even control the paint for the second unit.
Some of the concern about Williams being a traditional big man is unfounded. He flashed the ability to shoot the basketball at Tennessee. He shot 32.6% from three on a low volume this season, and his 81.9% free throw shooting is an even better sign for his future development.
Williams can also protect the rim. He blocked 1.5 shots per game during his three college seasons and displays great anticipation and instincts.
In the right situation, Williams could develop into a versatile big man with a well rounded game. In the meantime, he is an experienced player, who can score inside.
