Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that forward Leon Powe is “closing in” on a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Yahoo Sports! reports that the deal would be two years for the minimum if Cleveland’s doctors are “satisfied with the progress of his injured left knee”. Powe re-tore his left ACL in the Playoffs and dating back to his days at the University of California, has struggled with knee injuries. That same history of knee problems led the Boston Celtics to barely even take a sniff at him this summer. As Windhorst stated in his article, obviously the Cavs “feel like he’s worth the wait.”

Why is this important slash why am I talking about this? For one, it’s the continuation of the great story that has been Leon Powe. He deserves this little blog post. Another reason is because I’ll give props where props is due, and the Cavs deserve some credit for this move. It’s the definition of low-risk, high-reward. This may be more personal opinion than anything but I’ll take the potential of Powe over Old Joe Smith. It reeks of a smart move that could pay off big time this season if Powe’s knee is right. I always believed Powe was someone I thought the Blazers possibly should have taken a look at. Obviously, with the drafting of both Jeff Pendergraph and Dante Cunningham and the option to play Travis Outlaw at the 4, one could say there was no need for him. However with Powe out until the All-Star Break at the minimum, as Coup once suggested he could have been a nice, Shaun Livingston-esque investment.
