Damian Lillard cut from Team USA - Roster finalized

Damian Lillard will not be among the players to compete in the 2014 FIBA World Cup for Team USA. He was cut along with Gordon Hayward, Chandler Parsons, and Kyle Korver. The finalized roster for USA Basketball is as follows:

[G] Derrick Rose
[G] Stephen Curry
[G] Kyrie Irving
[G] James Harden
[G] DeMar DeRozan
[G] Klay Thompson
[F] Kenneth Faried
[F] Rudy Gay
[F/C] Anthony Davis
[C] DeMarcus Cousins
[C] Andre Drummond
[C] Mason Plumlee

This news is not entirely surprising, given Lillard’s lack of playing time in exhibition. Lillard played only two minutes in his first exhibition game, 24 minutes in his second exhibition game (Rose: DNP – fatigue), and no minutes at all in his third exhibition game.

Lillard had hoped to be useful in a supporting role, but Team USA Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski decided that depth was needed elsewhere. There are really no losers here. Everyone on the roster is there because they fit with Coach K’s vision for the team.

Lillard is interested in playing for Team USA in the future, and will likely receive another invite when the time is right. In the meantime, maybe he can use this repudiation as fuel for an impressive 2014-15 season with the Portland Trail Blazers.
