The Trail Blazers are down 0-2 to the Spurs in this second-round playoff series and have returned home to battle them in the Moda Center. The Portland crowd is renowned for reaching a fever pitch for their home team. While no man, woman, or child can rush the court to put points on the scoreboard, the sixth man effect can have a real impact on a player’s state of mind.
Dwight Howard of the Houston Rockets addressed the Rip City crowd on April 18th, prior to the first-round series that would later end on the Moda Center hardwood:
“If you’ve never played in Rip City, they call it Rip City for a reason – rest in peace for the other team. It’s tough to play there. Their fans are great, they’re always into the games, they’re loud. So we don’t want them to get the crowd involved. That’s the biggest thing, especially in the playoffs, is keeping the crowd quiet. If we can do that, if we can shut the crowd out, it’ll make it tough.”

It is time to get loud. It is time to get pumped. It is time to make homecourt advantage a reality. Most NBA players have music they like to listen to before games to pump them up. I think we may have figured out why Leonard lacks a mean streak. Kid is prepping for a picnic with his sweety, not a basketball game. Perhaps some of you have musical suggestions for him. Eye of the Tiger? The Rocky theme? I suppose this is a “to each their own” situation, but I’m half-seriously concerned. Regardless, the players are getting pumped and so should you. Get your groove on.
