Despite being mired in a late-season bog of bad news, the Portland Trail Blazers locked down 2/10 plays in the NBA Reign On Plays of the Week. The weekly top-10 drilldown is presented by Crown Royal.
#8) Having gained a significant lead at home against the Washington Wizards, the Trail Blazers placed their fate in the hands of their second unit. Usually, there isn’t much to crow about from the bench brigade aside from the occasional Will Barton dunk or Thomas Robinson block. However; Mo Williams treated us to a less than common trick known colloquially as ‘the nutmeg.’ After receiving the pass down low from Barton, and finding himself trapped on the baseline by a double team from former Blazer Andre Miller and the much larger Drew Gooden, Williams threaded a bounce pass between Gooden’s legs to an open Robinson for an easy two-handed jam.
#6) Up by only two points on the hapless Milwaukee Bucks in a game that should not have required overtime (but did), Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews took it upon himself to make sure Portland held their ground. With just over two minutes to play in the extra period, Matthews picked off a pass from Nate Wolters, intended for Brandon Knight, and stormed to the other end. With the long arms of Khris Middleton impeding his route to the basket, he craftily dropped a behind-the-back pass to a trailing Damian Lillard for an uncontested tomahawk slam. Matthews finished with a game-high 26 points to lead the Trail Blazers to victory 120-115.
