Jim Rome: Wesley Matthews on Trail Blazers' Success and Playing Angry

Wesley Matthews was a guest on the Jim Rome Show this afternoon. If you have never heard Matthews in an interview setting before, you’ll be surprised at how poised and humorous he is. Rome asked Wesley about a variety of different topics, including his “play angry” approach to the season.

How has this team been able to turn it around so quickly? Jim Rome didn’t waste a second to ask Matthews that question. After all, it’s been on most people’s mind. Matthews said, “Honestly, I don’t even know…We knew we could score the ball but in order to be special, you have to play on the other end of the court.” Not sure if they have emphasized all that much on the defensive end but they have been scoring the ball more effectively. When Rome asked Matthews what the biggest difference is between this year’s team and last year, Matthews simply said, “We trust each other.” You can definitely see that when you watch them play. The way they swing the ball and make the extra pass in order to get the best shot possible is remarkable.

Rome began to talk about Matthews’ personal mentality. He took us all the way back to when Matthews went undrafted and battled for a spot on the Utah Jazz roster. Next thing Wesley knew, he was signing a five year contract with the Trail Blazers. Did that affect his preparation and mind set? “I’ve never been the type to be content with anything… I always want more and I always push myself to get better,” Matthews said. He also mentioned that he has been playing more angry this year than he ever has. Rome took that comment and asked Matthews if someone can play angry. Matthews said, “You can play angry but it has to be a controlled anger.”

One last note of interest was the discussion about Wesley Matthews’ NBA 2K14 rating. According to “The Real 2K Insider“, Matthews’ 2K14 rating is 77, which is unchanged from 2K13. When Rome inquired if Matthews cared about that kind of stuff, Matthews replied, “Unfortunately I do.”

The Blazers are six wins away from matching last year’s overall record. Wesley Matthews is a great example of why it’s easy to love this Trail Blazers team. They all work hard, hustle, and look like they are having fun. They all have great personalities and strive to be a part of the community. What more could you ask for? Wins? Playoffs? Oh, they just so happen to be winning and headed in the direction of a playoff berth.
