Portland Trail Blazers rookie guard CJ McCollum tallied 13 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals in just 17 minutes of play in his debut with the Idaho Stampede. It was ultimately a losing effort, as the Stampede lost to the Vipers 104-109, but unless you’re the rare connoisseur of developmental basketball you’re probably more interested in the performance of the Trail Blazers 10th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.
McCollum is expected to play one more game in the D-League before returning to Portland and potentially playing against the Sacramento Kings on January 7th. The Stampede will have the opportunity to redeem themselves tonight in a rematch with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, which will again be viewable live on the D-League Youtube channel. If you missed tonight’s game, here is a first look at Portland’s prospect.
Note his ability to finish inside off the dribble. This skill will present his biggest opportunity to take minutes from Mo Williams, who struggles at scoring in the key. McCollum’s perfectly timed hesitation dribble-crossover to get him there doesn’t hurt either. It does not appear as though CJ McCollum has lost any steps since re-breaking his foot in October, though his real test will have to wait for a higher level of competition.
