As the NBA season draws nearer, but remains agonizingly far away, it’s difficult to get by without basketball to watch. We have a good idea what the Blazers will be like this year, but unless you have time carved out in the middle of your day to watch Batum (France) and Claver (Spain) in the EuroBasket tournament, you’re not seeing any Blazer basketball.
For the rookies, there aren’t even highlights and interviews to look back on. CJ McCollum is the pride and joy of Portland’s 2013 draft and, although I’ve mentioned his tradability as an asset (as was suspected the instant he was drafted), he will be a great addition to the Blazer squad if he remains in Portland.
So let’s get some footage in here, from college and later. I want you to see what he is like as a player and as a person so that we can appreciate what he brings to the table beyond the drawing board.
In an interview with official Blazer blogger, Sarah Hecht, CJ McCollum gave us a glimpse into his personality. He is a very sharp, well-spoken individual with multi-sport talent and a love for the game.
As for his basketball abilities, you will find no better breakdown than this video from one of my personal favorite resources, DraftExpress.
And for those of you who have even more time on your hands and want to see him in action, you may remember him from the bracket breaking upset in which LeHigh (15) defeated Duke (2) in the 2012 NCAA tournament.
Perhaps most tellingly, I will leave you with this interview McCollum did with Jalen Rose and Grantland’s Bill Simmons. CJ McCollum is driven, focused, and a student of the game; and as Jalen points out—he’s angry. That’s a beautiful combination when you’ve built a young team around work ethic like the Blazers have.
