4) Respect

Okay, this one is not a “must,” but it falls under the “if you love someone, let them go” category. Aldridge has granted innumerable wishes over the course of 7 Portland seasons, and it’s time to rub the lamp and wish for his freedom.

Don’t get me wrong, if it didn’t make good basketball sense, I would not recommend it, but he is ready and so are the Blazers. The 2014 February trade deadline will be bitter sweet, but probably a new beginning for both parties. Sending LMA to a contender is a win-win.

If Portland has formed a core that can immediately succeed without Aldridge, bully for them; if not, they get to cruise into the deepest draft in 30 years with a top 12 protected first round pick. I could sleep well at season’s end knowing Portland had a new starter, a high draft pick, and some fiscal flexibility.

As for non-basketball reasons, I would like to see Aldridge be happy. Maybe that’s not the right word. He is happy. I would like to see Aldridge be content. If that means a mutually beneficial arrangement that sends him on his way, so be it. I will thank him, I will miss him, and I will continue to support him.

(P.S. – Happy birthday, L-Train)
