Honestly, this shouldn’t be an award. Not that Lillard doesn’t deserve it for what it is, but come on. Damian Lillard has 188,377 followers as of the moment I wrote this sentence and 107,464 likes on facebook.
There were 12 of these superfluous awards handed out this year, including the “LOL Award” given to JaVale McGee for an erratic pass, and the “OMG Award” given to the Miami Heat for their Harlem Shake video.
And I thought the traditional awards were a joke this year. Not even Jordan Crawford receiving a 1st place vote for Sixth Man of the Year because a voter confused him with Jamal Crawford can touch the preposterousness of the social media accolades.
For the most part, it’s a personal problem. I recognize that it’s all in good fun, but I can’t quash the part of me that sees this as a middle school move by the NBA. Perhaps I’m too crotchety to laugh with hashtag culture. I’d just like to think the NBA is better than pandering.
At any rate, Damian is a winner. Take that for what it’s worth and respond how you will. The full list of winners and runner-ups is detailed here. #IronicStatement
