ESPN’s March Stein interrupted the recording of the Rip City Project’s first podcast to say that Portland was sending back-up point guard Jerryd Bayless to the New Orleans Hornets for a draft pick.
The Portland Trail Blazers have found a trade to create some extra roster room, agreeing Saturday to deal guard Jerryd Bayless to the New Orleans Hornets for a conditional future first-round pick, according to sources close to the situation.
Bayless all but confirms the deal with this tweet.
Selected 11th overall in the 2008 draft, Bayless struggled to find a home in Portland’s rotation, but the trade comes more out of necessity than anything else. With the signing of Fabricio Oberto, the Blazers were faced with an overloaded roster. Although dealing Bayless still keeps Portland with one too many players, there is now space to sign Patrick Mills if Portland goes through with the plan to waive or trade injured big man Jeff Pendergraph.
Bayless will be reunited in New Orleans with former Trail Blazers assistant coach Monty Williams, who took over the head coaching duties in NOLA after Jeff Bower resigned as head coach following the 2009-10 season.
